Opening the Floodgates of Heaven (Biblicality of Tithing)

Read Malachi 3:3-12

If there is one topic that preachers are trying to avoid, it’s the topic of giving. Just like any other Biblical principle, tithing is in the Bible and it has to be preached.  Remember that preachers are just “expositors” of the Word.  The message is not our message, it’s the Lord’s and we’re just His messengers.  Uncomfortable as we may be in the topic of giving or tithing, it’s something that we have to talk about .   Whether the church will respond favorably or not, is another story .

The Bible says 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'   This was mentioned in Deuteronomy 6:16 and mentioned by Jesus in Luke 4:12 when the devil was tempting him in the wilderness.  I searched the Bible and found out that the word test was mentioned 58 times and in most cases it talked about God testing man or the Israelites testing God and He was not pleased with that.  But there is one occasion when God said that we can TEST Him and this is in Malachi 3:10 when He was talking about giving. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

Do you know what a flytrap is?  It’s something we use to trap flies.  Have you seen a flytrap?  In the Philippines, usually it’s a piece of paper that we place on top of the dining table. I remember when I was a young boy, my mom would buy those fly traps and she would place them all over and I would find myself accidentally touching them.  Oh they’re so sticky and gluey.   It contains such a honey-like substance that attracts the flies.   One day, there’s this fly that got attracted to a fly trap, so when the fly saw that honey-like substance, he said “I want the honey I want the honey I want the honey!”  So the fly flew straight to the fly trap and landed on it and he began eating the honey and he was so happy saying “ I got the honey I got the honey I got the honey”  So, when the fly was all full and so bloated with honey, he tried to leave but obviously he’s stuck… so the trap started to shout “I got the fly I got the fly I got the fly”
I’m sure you understand the point this story is trying to tell us…sometimes we thought we are in control of our money, but in reality, our money is the one controlling us.

Is Tithing Biblical?
In the Old Testament, we can see that God has instituted tithing 500 years even before before the law of Moses.
Abraham started it in Genesis 14, Abraham gave tithes to King Melchizedek.
Jacob continued it.   In Genesis 28 he said “this stone I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.
Then during Moses time, it was made part of the Old Testament law.   Leviticus 27:30 says “A tithe of everything from the Land whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees belongs to the Lord.”

It was further confirmed hundreds of years later by the wisest man who has ever lived, <<CLICK>>  King Solomon.  In Proverbs 3:9-10 he said “honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops.
500 years later, the Lord spoke through a prophet named Malachi.  He said “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”

I don’t think there is any argument about tithing in the Old Testament. But some people will say we are New Testament believers.  We are no longer subject to Old Testament laws like tithing.  We are no longer subject to the laws?  Didn’t Jesus Christ abolish the law?  Well, yes and no. The law of sin and death – Jesus Christ has abolished that.  Yes we are no longer a subject of that.  If we have Christ in our heart, if we commit a sin, we don’t die spiritually anymore.  We just claim assurance of forgiveness in 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”  But there are other Old Testament laws that still apply to us, in fact, Jesus even expanded the coverage of certain Old Testament laws.  What do I mean by that?  Let’s see…

First of all, Jesus did not abolish the law.  He said himself in Matthew 5:17  "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

Question:  Did Jesus abolish the law or not? NO.  In fact, do you know that Jesus even expounded or expanded the Old Testament laws.  Jesus was a lot more strict.
He said during His sermon on the mount, in Matthew 5 ---
On Murder -  "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder,  and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother  will be subject to judgment
On Adultery  -  "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.‘   But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart
On Revenge     "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.  You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.

This next verse is very important and this has been subjected to wrong interpretations.   In Matthew 23:23  "For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.”

Question:  Did Jesus abolish TITHING?  NO!  Why, because He said the opposite.  He said, you should tithe, YES!  Yes means yes! I don’t know why some people will tend to interpret this word as it is some sort of a metaphor or allegory.   So when Jesus said you should tithe, Yes! He means “yes.”  I don’t know how else to interpret this.   Sometimes, we make the simple things complicated.  Sometimes, when we read the Bible, we try to “read between the lines” when in fact everything that you have to read is already “on the lines.”

But the issue in this verse is not tithing, the issue is the failure of the Jews especially the Pharisees to do the more important things in life, i.e. justice, mercy, faith.
This is similar to what Paul said in 1st Corinthians 13.
If I speak in the tongue of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,  but do not have love, I gain nothing.  Let’s add something that Jesus said, “if I give my tithes but do not have love, I am nothing.”

Maybe you will ask,  "will this apply to us? Jesus is talking to the Pharisees."  Read this verse: "For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.”   Matthew 5:20

Why didn’t Jesus preach about tithing?  Well, I don’t know why He did not preach tithing.  He might have a long preaching about tithing.   It’s found in John 21:25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

Or maybe aside from Matthew 23:23 where Jesus is clearly saying that we should tithe, maybe He did not preach tithing at all.  You know why… because He doesn’t have to… you know why?  Because the Jews had no issue about tithing. They were all tithing.  They were all very obedient to the law.  In fact, their issue is becoming too attached to the law that they are overlooking the more important things like love, justice, mercy.  Their issue is too much religiosity.  Their issue is too much strictly compliant with the laws and because of that, their  eyes are spiritually blind that they cannot truly see that the Messiah was already in their midst.
Do you think if we know that WCF members are all tithing, we would preach about tithing?  Probably NOT.  Probably we’ll mention it “in passing” in some of our sermons but not devote the whole sermon about tithing because there are more pressing issues.

Let us look at some of the most respected Christian leaders of our time today,  preachers who believe and practice tithing:

Dr. Rick Warren, author of Purpose Driven Life and pastor of Saddleback Church said “the purpose of tithing is to teach us to always put God first in our lives”.   If just happen to see how God has blessed Saddleback Church in Orange County – their property there is probably the size of Richmond Center or even bigger. They have their own roads and an overpass.  They probably have 7 worship centers and their Children’s Ministry alone has 3 buildings.   You know one reason they attribute this tremendous blessing?  It’s because they are faithful givers. Rick Warren himself, is reported to just have kept 10% of his royalty earnings from his book Purpose Driven Life.  In his case, he gave the 90%.  He returned all his salaries as a pastors during the time he was earning enough from his book.  Rick Warren said:
““the purpose of tithing is to teach us to always put God first in our lives”

Dr. David Jeremiah, pastor of Shadow Mountain and radio preacher.  He said “tithing is a matter of priority, a method of proving God and a measure of provision.

Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian fellowship, he said I CANNOT AFFORD NOT to Tithe.

One of my favorite preachers, the late Dr. Adrian Rogers said that “God’s tithe is to be brought to God’s house on God’s day so that God’s work will be done God’s way.”  He was also quoted as saying “a faith that hasn’t reach your wallet probably hasn’t reached your heart”  Pastor Rogers said one Sunday when the elders had taken up the offering and brought the plates down to the altar, he took the plates and held them up in the air and he gave a prayer: "Lord, regardless of what we say about you with our lips, this is really what we say about you, this is really what we feel about you. This is really what you mean to us. Amen."

Charles Stanley of In Touch ministries said “when we give our tithe to God, we provide for His work, prove his faithfulness and show him honor.

Ed Lapiz in his book siksik, liglig at umaapaw has admonished his readers “subukan ninyo” or try it and then you’ll see how God will respond.

Ron de Villa , Senior Pastor of Word Christian Fellowship ““Your attitude about tithing (faith-giving) clearly reflects your faith and obedience to God.”

From our verse today, Malachi 3:10, God is telling us:

1. Tithing is clearly a command from the Lord (v10a)

Verse 10 starts with the word “BRING.”  The Lord is not even saying “please,” not because the Lord is impolite, but because He is the Lord, He is the King… He is giving us a command.  He said “BRING” the tithes into the storehouse.    The Bible says “the Earth is the Lord’s and everything in it. Psalm 50:10-11 says “for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine.  Since everything is owned by the Lord, including our very life, He doesn’t need to say “please”

2.  Following or ignoring the Lord’s command has its consequences.

If we ignore the Lord’s command, in verse 8 it says “we are robbing God.”  Is this too harsh?  Of course not… because it’s His.  We are just caretakers.  We are just stewards.  He said in verse 9 to the Israelites, your whole nation is under a curse because you are robbing me.  If church members are not following the command and we are not faithfully tithing, we are also robbing God.  We should know what the consequences are by not following.   But let’s not focus on the negative, let’s focus on the positive side… what if we OBEY?
The Lord said “TEST” me on this… He’s saying “just try obeying me” and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.  I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty.  “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the Lord Almighty.

3.  God will certainly bless those who will obey – not just the person but the church as well.

The BIBLE said the purpose of TITHING as well…so there may be food in the storehouse.  Tithing is meant for the operations of the CHURCH.  The money you send to your families is not considered TITHING.  Tithing is given to the church so the church can sustain its operations.  We don’t have enough time today to discuss “grace giving” Some people would reference to 2 Cor. 8:7 (please take note).

Those of you who have not experience giving your tithes.  I’m not expecting you to start next week.  Do it gradually.  Do it slowly.  It will hurt, yes  I know.  But remember what King David said “I will not give offerings that cost me nothing.”  Giving precedes the blessing”  God is only asking a proportionate part of your income. If you earn less, you give less. That’s plain and simple.
The big question is:
Why are you struggling?
Why are you drowning in debt?
Why cant you have financial stability?
Could it be because you are not OBEYING God?

There is a huge volume of blessing that awaits people who obey.
Test Him and you will see!

PRAYER
Wherever you are, whatever you situation you may be -- you need the love of Jesus in your life.  Please say this prayer sincerely from your heart:
Father God, I confess all my sins to you today.  Please forgive me.  Today, I open my heart to your Son Jesus Christ.  I accept Him in my life as my Savior and as my Lord.  May the Holy Spirit come to my life and make me the kind of person you want me to be.  In Jesus Name, I pray.  Amen.

B.F.F. Have You Got One?

Do you have a best friend? BFF?  Merriam and Websters Online defines B.F.F. as Best Friends Forever.  If you read the Bible, you’ll understand that if you are married, it’s important that your spouse is your best friend.  How hard is it to find a true friend?  They say in our time today, a true friends are an “endangered species.”

Capernaum   is located at the north corner of the Sea of Galilee, it was the center of Jesus activities in the Galilee and his town during that time. Jesus taught in the local synagogue. It was also the home town of the apostles Peter, James, Andrew and John, and the tax collector Matthew.

For first-century Jews:
-  There  sickness and sin are connected.  Any sickness was a manifestation of a much deeper moral issue
-  People got sick because of their sins.  Oftentimes  they attribute sickness  to  generational sins – they believe that the sins of their parents can cause a serious illness to the children.
-  To be forgiven, the following must happen in this order:
1.      HEALING
2.      CLEANSING
3.      SACRIFICE
In our story in Mark 2, when Jesus returns to Capernaum, he “disregarded” the Jewish law even though he understands it and has adhered to it in the past.  In this story,  healing and forgiveness do not take place in the order that is understood and accepted by first-century Jews.  Instead, the following happens:
1.       The man’s friends, made a sacrifice of  their time and effort, offer the man before Jesus.
2.       Jesus says, “Your sins are forgiven,” thereby proclaiming him clean.
3.       Jesus heals the man.

What caught my attention in this story are the four friends of the paralyzed man.  They climbed up the house, and then made some holes in the roof and laid the man down straight right in front of Jesus.  This is the reason why I said the story has a touch of humour.

What is a True B.F.F.?

1.  A true BFF trusts and have faith in Jesus Christ (v5)
I think the first important thing that tells us about the character of the four friends is their trust and faith in Jesus Christ.  Imagine they had to go through a lot of obstacles.  The Bible says  “do not get equally yoke with unbelievers..” 2nd Corinthians 6:14
These four friends in our story did something unconventional for the sake of friendship.  They climbed on top of the roof, laid down a blanket with their friend just to bring him to Jesus.

2. A true BFF stays with you even during times of trials (v3)
The Bible tells us in Proverbs 17:17 “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.”
The sad thing is … sometimes we stick to a friend because they flatter us… they always agree with us.  They say to us what we want to hear.   That is even more dangerous.  A true friend is one who can come to you, look you in the eye and point out your faults… right on your face.  A true friend understands that a “gentle rebuke goes farthest with a man of understanding.”
3.  A true BFF brings you closer to Jesus Christ (v4).

Conclusion:
God’s love is manifested through the friendship of someone else.   God’s friendship is expressed through someone else’s love.
There is a true friend who sticks closer than a brother … His name is JESUS

13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. John 15:13-15

Is Jesus your B.F.F.?

A Changeless Word in an Ever-changing World

Hebrews 13:8 says “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Changes are happening all around us. According to one song,
life is a constant change – and nothing stays the same, clouds that move across the skies are changing form before our very eyes…

Change is one thing we can be sure to happen in this life. A major change happened in the life of Adam and Even in the garden of Eden after they ate the forbidden fruit. We don’t know everything that Adam said to Eve as they were about to leave the Garden but one thing he might have
said was “My dear Eve, our world is definitely going to change… this is all your fault.”
Remember the fear and uncertainty that the Israelites felt when they were about to cross the Red Sea, from Egypt to the wilderness or 40 years later from the wilderness to the Promised Land.

Consider these changes –
-  It’s estimated that 90% of all items in the supermarket didn’t exist 10 years ago.
-  More information has been produced in the last 30 years than in the past 5,000 years –
one main reason for this is the world-wide web or the internet.
- It is estimated that 50% of graduates are getting jobs that did not exist when they were born.

I read this somewhere:
‘My great grandfather rode a horse but was afraid of a train. My grandfather rode a train but was afraid of a car. My father rode in a car but was afraid of an airplane. I ride in an airplane but am afraid of a horse.’ That’s a full cycle of changes .

The dramatic steps made in technology are simply breathtaking. We can barely catch up with the changes in technology. The rate of change is so great today, we begin to ask
"is there nothing constant anymore? "

According to Greek philosopher Heraclitus, “the only thing constant in this world is change itself.” I heard an advertisement in KARI Christian Radio, a baby breathes his first, a grandmother breathes her last. A young girl starts her first day in pre-school, a young lady sets off to college. This world is in a constant state of change.

The Church is not a stranger to CHANGE. According to Rick Warren, some of the most challenging and major changes a church can face are the following:
1. Change the pastor
2. Change the church venue
3. Change the church worship time
4. Change the church name.

Our verse for this morning answers the question
“Is there really anything or anyone who does not change?”

So there is indeed someone who does not change. God Himself is the Changeless Word in this Ever-Changing World. The Bible says… “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever." The Word of God who created the heavens and the Earth does not change. The Bible says in John 1…
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was with God in the beginning.
3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
And then in verse 14 it says… The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

There is a word that describes the unchanging nature of God. It’s called… IMMUTABILITY
If you will search the Scriptures to find the word “immutability” you will be disappointed to find that the literal word only appears once and its only on the King James or New King James version. This verse is found in Heb. 6:17 which says… Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath.

Have you heard the word "mutation?" Mutation means genetic changes that produce new offspring. Something is mutable if it is subject to change in any degree. Therefore, to be immutable means to be unchanging and unchangeable. It means that God does not change in his basic character. His purposes do not change. He never grows in knowledge or wisdom. He never differs from or contradict himself. He never improves upon his own perfection. He is Always wise, Always sovereign, Always just, Always good, Always holy, Always merciful, Always gracious. There are no “sometimes” attributes of God. All of his attributes are “always” attributes. He always is what he is.

Three points concerning God`s unchangeable character:
First, God is Immutable because His promises never change.
We break our promises all the time. Who are the DADs here? Men have an unwritten rule in manhood and its called  Word of Honor. They say women, we love them so much, that we allow them to change their minds sometimes.  Men, on the other hand, is not. “dictum meum pactum” Our word is our bond which is the motto of the stock exchange since the 1800s. But let’s be honest here, especially the men… a lot of us fail in this area sometimes…keeping promises. Because a lot of times, we’re busy… we’re occupied with more important things… How many of us have promised to do something with our kids but then we failed to do it. I’ve done it a couple of times and
thank God, He gives me the opportunity to make up for it sometimes.

Our God is like a father to us. But unlike most fathers, God never makes excuses. He never has to because he always keeps his promises. God keeps His Word. His Word is His bond. In fact, its more than His bond. His Word is His Only begotten Son! The Bible says in
James 1:17 " Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows"

James is using something scientific here… it’s cosmological. “The “Father of lights” is the God who created the heavenly bodies. The heavenly bodies eclipse each other, they move and turn and cast shadows on the earth and on each other. They are created things, so they change. But the God who made them does not change. His gifts always turn out to be good, even when, for the present, we cannot figure out how. He will give nothing but what is best. We can count on that. It is the promise of an unchanging God. Church, God’s promises never change.

Second, God is Immutable because His purposes never change.

We change our plans frequently. We make our list for the day and plan to do certain things but along the way, we change our plans. That’s the way life is. We plan to go to a place, we change our minds. They say, women change their minds more often than men. Do you agree Ladies? Well, they say this is because there are a lot of things that are going on in their minds whereas the men… they don’t have too much in their minds. Sometimes our plans are not very realistic and we must alter them. In WCF, we came up with Strategic Plans. If you want to know what are our strategic plans, you may check our website. We came up with plans and we try our very best to accomplish our plans.

But God’s purposes and plans never change. He always accomplishes his plans. God’s purpose and His oath are both unchangeable like what we read earlier in Hebrews 6:17. It is comforting to know that God’s plan for this world will never change, and that He will carry it out right on schedule according to His own good pleasure. As He said through Isaiah, Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, “My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure” (Isaiah 46:9-10).

Psalm 33:11 says “But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations..”

Third, God is Immutable because His character never changes.

He is not fickle-minded like most of us. His character never changes. Unlike most of us, we live in Port Moody…we`re so moody. . The Latin word for MOON is LUNA. This is where we get our word “Lunes” in English, Monday or Moon Day. Luna is also the root word of LUNATIC. They say, because of some scientific and gravitational reasons, and since the human body is 80% water, our behavior changes when it’s full moon. Because the moon is closer to earth and it produces more gravitational pull… thus, affecting human emotions and behavior…we become lunatics. God is not like that, He mood is not dependent on other things. He never had bad days or good days. He does not wake up in the wrong side of the bed. He doesn’t treat us according to the whims of the moment. He is always completely consistent and unchanging with himself.

People change in their attitudes toward us. They may be grumpy in the morning and friendly at noon. They may whisper gossip to us and then turn around to another person and gossip about us. All of us have been disappointed by people we consider were friends who let us down because they didn’t live up to our expectations. God feels about us the same way he did when he sent Christ to the earth. Most people rejected Christ. The same love that He had before is the same love that He has for us now. What if God changed as we do? We would never pray. We would never trust him. We would never venture out in faith. We would never ask for his help.

We live in an ever-changing world but we thank the Lord Jesus that He is the same yesterday, today and forever. The same Jesus in whom the whole universe was created, the same Jesus who sacrificed His life on the cross is the same Jesus who offers grace to you and me so we can have eternal life.
Do you have the unchangeable JESUS CHRIST in your heart?

Accepting Jesus in your heart is the most important change that you can ever make in your entire life.
The Bible says if anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation… the old is gone… the new has come! This is the kind of change that God wants us to have. A change of heart! A change of life. A change of priorities. The Apostle Paul calls this transformation.

Are you willing to make that change?

Going the Extra Mile

Read from Matthew 5:38-42:

38  “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’
39    But I tell you, do not resist an evil person.
If anyone slaps you on the right cheek,
turn to them the other cheek also.
40   And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt,
hand over your coat as well.
41   If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.
42  Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

The above passages are part of the Sermon on the Mount.  This sermon does not teach the way to salvation but instead, it guides those who are saved in how they shall live.
“Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth” is an Old Testament law  mentioned in Exodus 21:24,  Leviticus 24:20 and Deuteronomy 19:21
There is something very interesting here   in terms of interpreting God’s Word.  The Old Testament Law, “eye for eye, tooth for tooth” was given as a guide to the nation of Israel, to the judges --- it’s not a personal law.  But what the Pharisees and some corrupt Jews were doing, they are using it as a poor alibi to get personal revenge.  So, a national law was used as a personal law.

Now, Jesus knew what the Pharisees and the Israelites have done, making the national law a personal law, He  laid down, some personal laws that would address the earlier problem.  He said “resist not an evil person” and this is more of a personal law.  We cannot use this or apply this to governments and judges.  Otherwise, you will have criminals set free or rapists go unpunished or even stubborn children not being disciplined.  The problem now, these personal laws are interpreted by others as national laws.

“Jesus is here talking to his disciples, and speaking of personal relations: he is not laying down moral directives for states and nations, and such issues as the work of police or the questions of a defensive war are simply not in his mind.” (A. M. Hunter, A Pattern for Life: An Exposition of the Sermon on the Mount)

LIFE LESSONS
Lesson #1:   “Going the extra mile” means ...We should be willing to take insults because we are confident and secured with our position in Christ.

Scholars believe that under normal circumstances, a slap to the right cheek can only come from the back of a right hand and during those times, this is more of an “insult” rather than an “injury.”  The perpetrator here is not trying to physically abuse the other person, he’s not interested in cracking his jaw so the person would lose his teeth... no!  He is trying to insult the other person.

Have you ever been insulted?  People insult you to gain control. If they can get you to insult them back, you've given them the upper hand and it puts them in control.  What Jesus was saying in Matthew 5 is to just “let it go.”  Don't play their game. Give the situation to God.  How much insult and injury did the Lord Jesus Christ suffer?  What did He do in return?  He prayed for them... “Father forgive them they don’t know what they do.”
1st Peter 3:9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing

Lesson #2:   “Going the extra mile” means ... We should go out of our way to help even those who least expect our kindness. (v40)

In verse 40, Jesus uses “hyperbole”   to prove a point.  If you take this verse literally, this would only mean that His disciples would be walking around naked.
There is one important historical context that we should understand here.  In those days, people wore two principal clothes - the inner garment or tunic and the outer garment or cloak.  During those times, under Mosaic law, a person’s cloak was something he almost had an inalienable right to retain.  (Ex 22:26-27).  In those days, no one could take away a person’s cloak. It’s very important that it can be taken as  collateral in a loan, but it should be returned by nightfall because a person’s cloak also functions as his sleeping bag!   In this verse, Jesus says if someone is harsh towards you, sued you for your tunic... let him have your cloak as well, again, not to be taken literally.  What Jesus meant... sometimes, we have to give up even what is rightfully ours – just for the sake of keeping peace and for  building up  God’s kingdom.

Lesson #3:   “Going the extra mile” means ... We should not resent helping others even when they are not too grateful. (v41)

This illustration again requires us to understand a bit about the Jewish and Roman culture of those days.  Under the Roman law, and the Jews really hated this law, a Roman soldier can require Jewish civilians to carry the luggage of a military personnel up to a distance of one mile.  Sometimes, regardless of how we feel, Jesus said “Go an extra mile.”   We should not resent helping others even when they are not too grateful.

The Bible says in Luke 6:33“And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that”            God bless you!

Amen.

Navigating Our True North

It is very important for sailors to be very certain about their directions whenever they sail out on a journey.    The success of their journey depends largely to how well they know their directions.

Same is true in life.  One important question to ask is whether we are navigating based on “true north” or “magnetic north.”  There’s a big difference between the two - magnetic north changes based on the earth’s magnetic field while true north is a fixed direction.   As we navigate through life, it is very important that we are pointing at the right direction… something that does not change or depend on things that vary.  Magnetic north represents the direction that this world is telling us to take.  It may appear very attractive at first and it may result in momentary pleasures but destruction is waiting in the end.

I flew to Henderson, NV last January 1 for work,  landing at Las Vegas airport.  As the airplane descended I saw the city of Las Vegas in the midst of darkness like an island made of gold with different colors and bright lights.  What an amazing view!  What an attractive destination!  But then I realized that I am bound to a different place… I was going somewhere else!

Hebrews 12:2a says we should be “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.”   Jesus is our true north.  He is the same yesterday, today and forever.  He does not change like shifting shadows and His love for us is beyond measure.

Navigating our true north means being certain that Jesus lives in us and we look up to Him in everything that we do.  It means being guided by His words and being filled with the Holy Spirit.
